Over Many Waters Demo Release
Over Many Waters' Demo/Teaser build is finally setting sail! Anchors away! This game demo is done!!!
I've been developing OMW on and off for 3 years (~1.5 years actually). It's time to traverse new seas and venture into uncharted territories.
The Game
Over Many Waters is my passion project. It started as the Pirate Game around late 2022, but after a deep dive into pirates and Spanish conquest, I decided to spice it up and add my own Spanish and Mexican heritage to the theme. Having been adopted at birth, I felt disconnected from the old cultures of Mexico and even Spanish culture. That's why I wanted to create Over Many Waters and bring attention to the diversity, excitement, and wild legends of Mesoamerica.
The Journey
I've learned so much as a solo developer. I've done about 6 smaller showcase events and 1 major convention exhibit. Hundreds of people have played my game in person and I've enjoyed watching those experiences. MAGFest 2025 was my best event. Around 250 players visited my two gaming stations. Those two little stations ran for a straight 75 hours without fail <3. Bless those little low-spec Dells.
Outside of events, I've had a lot of support from friends and family. Baltimore Indie Games, IGDA Baltimore, and IGDA DC all gave countless hours of playtesting, feedback, and moral support to get this far. My children played OMW at each new iteration with every update and new system. And how can I forget to mention the most important thing about OMW. The name! One day I was telling my grandfather about this seafaring exploration game I was working on where you could travel to many islands and sail around adventuring. He started making hand gestures without saying anything. His hand went up, down, and around. Then he motioned waves up and down. Then he said, "Over Many Waters"! I think he was trying to mimic how Native Americans speak in old Westerns, but he NAILED it! I immediately exclaimed, "That's the name of the game right there!"
The Takeaway
First, I'd like to say this does not necessarily mark the end of development for OMW. I've learned a lot and I'm still passionate about developing an Aztec RPG. There aren't enough Aztec games out there and the culture feels massively underrepresented. But it's hard to make games. Especially full-blown RPGs. I'm only one person and this was my first big project. I feel pleased with the results. I learned a great deal of dev techniques and getting accepted into a huge convention to show my game was very rewarding. I'm proud of my progress and I'm ready to explore new paths.
I'm likely to be found working on more tiny projects soon. In addition to those little "jams" I want to study and develop multiplayer games. My family gets a lot of joy from mp games and I think there's real potential there with the skillset I've built in coding and art.
I hope someone reads this and feels inspired. It's difficult to build games and it's even more difficult to know when it's time to part ways from a long journey like this. Even if it's temporary. I've seen a lot of devs in my circle work on games for 3 years, 6 years, and even over a decade! I don't know if that's quite healthy in all cases. In my case, it's time to sharpen my skills on new projects.
Please, this next part means a lot to me. Drop a comment and follow my work. Your support makes a difference in my life. Developing games is mostly a hobby for me and it helps me grow healthier as a person. If you like the project, please consider supporting me and share OMW or my portfolio.
